Nom porté par des Juifs séfarades souvent originaires d'Algérie. Variantes : Chekli, Chekly, Chicli, Secly, Sekli, Sekly. Le sens est incertain. Maurice Eisenbeth (voir bibliographie) proposait trois possibilités : d'abord un mot arabe évoquant la mèche de cheveux que les Juifs laissent tomber au-dessus de l'oreille. Ensuite un nom de métier araméen avec le sens d'artiste polissant les vases en métal. Enfin un gentilé désignant celui qui est originaire de Sicile. Cette dernière solution pourrait être la meilleure.
